Recidiverende urineweginfecties worden doorgaans bestreden met antibiotica. Tegen de achtergrond van toenemende antibioticaresistentie kan de cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) een veilig alternatief bieden. Geconcentreerde cranberrypreparaten worden goed verdragen en geven geen resistentievorming. Cranberry’s verhinderen dat bacteriën die vaak blaasontstekingen veroorzaken (E. coli), zich hechten aan het slijmvlies van de urinewegen. Een belangrijk bijkomend voordeel is dat cranberry’s deze aanhechting ook verhinderen van E. coli-bacteriën die resistent zijn tegen antibiotica1.
