In sommige kringen wordt aangenomen dat het westers georiënteerde dieet te veel zuurvormende producten bevat. Daardoor zouden lichaamsvloeistoffen netto verzuren, hetgeen mogelijk een nadelig effect heeft op de botgezondheid. Gesuggereerd wordt dat nutriënten en preparaten met een alkalische werking de botmineraaldichtheid gunstig beïnvloeden en de kans op botfracturen doen verminderen. De vraag rijst: in hoeverre worden deze stellingen wetenschappelijk onderbouwd? Zijn voedingsadviezen om de zuurbelasting in te perken zinvol?
