Beschrijving
Vitamine B12 is, zoals de naam al zegt, onderdeel van de vitamine B familie, het vitamine B-Complex. De andere naam voor vitamine B12 is cobalamine of extrinsieke factor. Cobalamines zijn in water oplosbare verbindingen met vitamine B12 activiteit. Ze worden gekenmerkt door een grote en complexe chemische structuur die een kobalt ion bevat. Het zijn de enige bekende natuurlijk voorkomende kobalthoudende verbindingen in de natuur. Cobalamine werd in 1926 ontdekt en het werd geïsoleerd uit lever. Bij mensen fungeren cobalamines als cofactor voor twee enzymen, te weten methioninesynthase en methylmalonyl co-enzym A mutase, wat belangrijke enzymen zijn in respectievelijk de DNA-stofwisseling en de productie van energie uit eiwitten en vetten.
Voor dat vitamine B12 bekend was werd bij ziekten die het gevolg waren van B12-gebrek leverextract gebruikt, zonder dat men wist waarom dit hielp. Leverextract als bron van B12 is inmiddels verleden tijd; de vitamine wordt nu gemaakt met behulp van speciaal voor dit doel geselecteerde bacteriën.
