Serhan et al. introduceerden in 1996 de term resoleomics
(resoleomica), het proces waarbij de ontsteking opgelost (geresolveerd) wordt. Het belang van de Serhans ontdekking ligt bij het feit dat de aanzet tot ontstekingsoplossing een gecontroleerd immuunproces is, en niet louter het gevolg van een uitdoving of uitputting van de immuunreactie. Resoleomica kan beschouwd worden als het herstelmechanisme van homeostatische evenwichten na een letsel, ontsteking of infectie. Onder normale omstandigheden is resoleomica in staat om ontstekingsreacties te beëindigen. Kijken we naar de huidige pandemie van chronische medische en psychiatrische ziekten waarbij ook chronische ontstekingen verwikkeld zijn, dan blijkt kennelijk dat resoleomica haar 'resolverend potentieel' niet meer vervult.
