Atopische dermatitis (eczeem) is een huidziekte met een allergische grondslag. De belangrijkste invalshoeken van hedendaags wetenschappelijke onderzoek laten zich indelen als inside-out- en outside-in-factoren. Inside-out betreft de allergische reactie, ontstekingen die 'op scherp' staan en een verstoorde darmmicrobiota. Outside-in slaat op de gebrekkige huidbarrière, de microbiota van de huid die daarop inspeelt en zelfs de voedselallergenen waaraan het lichaam via de huid blootgesteld wordt. Atopische dermatitis vraagt om een multidisciplinaire aanpak.
