Het humaan papillomavirus (HPV) behoort tot de groep van de DNA-virussen en tot de familie van de papillomavirusssen. Van dit DNA-virus zijn er maar liefst meer dan honderd verschillende types beschreven die bovendien ook nog zeer weinig van elkaar verschillen. HPV-infecties en de daarbij behorende ziektebeelden komen wereldwijd veelvuldig voor (Parkin 2006). Ongeveer 80 procent van de seksueel actieve bevolking komt ooit in aanraking met dit virus (Melkert 1993, Jacobs 2000).
