Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat bij patiënten met depressieve klachten de folaatspiegels vaak verlaagd zijn. Een foliumzuurtekort gaat gepaard met ernstigere klachten en een slechtere reactie op de behandeling met antidepressiva. Het verbeteren van de folaatinname en andere B-vitaminen zou mogelijk depressieve gevoelens verlichten.
