
Een ernstig vitamine B12-tekort (B12, cobalamine) veroorzaakt anemie en neurologische en psychiatrische afwijkingen.1-5a B12-deficiëntie komt veel voor onder ouderen.5a,6,7 In de UK bedraagt het risico hierop ongeveer 10% bij de 65- tot 74-jarigen en 20% bij ouderen boven de 74 jaar.8 Onvoldoende B12-inname is de belangrijkste oorzaak van een B12-tekort bij jongvolwassenen, terwijl onvoldoende B12-opname de belangrijkste oorzaak is bij ouderen.7 Dit artikel gaat dieper in op de materie dan mijn vorige bijdrage in Voedingsgeneeskunde jg. 17 nr. 5, ‘Vitamine B12, het vitamine waarom wordt gevochten’.
