Moedersterfte komt in het welvarende deel van de wereld niet veel voor. Waar dat toch het geval is, is pre-eclampsie (zwangerschapsvergiftiging) de belangrijkste oorzaak. Hoewel het overgrote deel van de zwangere vrouwen overleeft, zijn de gevolgen voor moeder en kind ernstig.
