Dopamine- en Serotoninesysteem
Neurotransmitters komen voort uit aminozuren (eiwitbronnen). Om bijvoorbeeld adrenaline te produceren zijn er een aantal stappen nodig. Eiwitbronnen bevatten l-fenylalanine, dit essentiële aminozuur wordt met behulp van onder andere foliumzuur omgezet in l-tyrosine, dat met hulp van een aantal cofactoren via l-dopa wordt omgezet in dopamine. Dopamine wordt vervolgens met hulp van SAMe, B12, B6 en folaat (biologisch actieve vorm van foliumzuur) weer omgezet in noradrenaline en adrenaline. Voor het produceren van melatonine gaat de omzetting via het essentiële aminozuur tryptofaan via 5-HTP naar serotonine en dan naar melatonine.
