Het oude paradigma van de 19e - 20e eeuw beschouwde de mens als een 'zelfvoorzienend organisme' en alle microben als vijanden die uitgeroeid moeten worden om ziekte te genezen. Recente wetenschappelijke inzichten hebben de onjuistheid hiervan aangetoond en liggen aan de basis het nieuwe en correctere concept van de mens als 'supra-organisme': een symbiose met microbiële gemeenschappen als partners, waarbij een delicate balans de grens tussen gezondheid en ziekte bepaalt.
