Het menselijk lichaam beschikt over een holistisch
verdedigingssysteem, met als functie bedreigingen te herkennen en
vernietigen, en/of de schade te minimaliseren of herstellen.
Klassiek: dit wordt gerealiseerd door de samenwerking tussen
barrières -huid, slijmvliezen en (darm)flora- en het
immuunsysteem. Dit alles moet echter nog tot ontwikkeling komen
in de neonatale periode. Naast het aangeboren moet het verworven
(adaptatief) immuunsysteem evenwichtig uitrijpen, met een goede
balans tussen de TH1- en TH2-respons, én
immuuntolerantie in de weefsels waar dat nodig is. Het moet in
optimale omstandigheden ook zorgen voor een stabiele, levenslange
microbiële homeostase.
