Het wordt gezien als de ernstigste angststoornis, opgeroepen door schokkende gebeurtenissen: de posttraumatische stressstoornis (PTSS). De ziekte treedt op als iemand niet in staat is om na enige tijd tot verwerking te komen en de wonden niet geheeld worden. Wel zijn er behandelingen beschikbaar die door psychiaters met wisselend succes worden toegepast. Psychotherapie, farmacotherapie, maar ook meer onconventionele middelen en adviezen komen in aanmerking.
